Sunseeker asks:
Are the politicians working in the best interests of the electorate as a whole?
For the good of the many or the few?
I would say the politicians are working for what they see as the good of future generations as yet unborn. That is the esoteric policy. The exoteric policy is that they pretend to be working for the good of present generations, but in fact they are prepared to sacrifice present generations for the good of future generations as yet unborn. They believe the end justifies the means.
Here is how I see history working out:
History thrives on crises. History thrives on economic and financial crises because they turn the world into a melting pot. The present crisis will, in the end, mean less freedom for the individual and more control by governments. The European countries that make up the European Union sacrificed national sovereignty in order to establish the European Union, after the Second World War. Now, with the present crisis, they will sacrifice even more national sovereignty and experience tighter government controls and less freedom and more hardships. The same goes for the US; in the end there will be less freedom and more government control and more hardships. The world is leaving democracy behind and heading towards totalitarianism and world dictatorship.
History thrives on political and economic turmoil and unrest. The First World War speeded up history and government control. The Second World War speeded up history and government control. After a world conflict it is a good idea to look to see who the winners are and who the losers are.
What is the long-term goal of history? We might say one of the long-term goals of history is world unity, one universal identity north, south, east and west. One of the goals of history is to bring about an end to national identities, religious identities, and tribal identities so as to achieve one universal identity, one universal law, one universal truth, one universal religion (man is god), north, south, east and west.
A winner of the First World War was the League of Nations (future world government). A winner of the Second World War was the United Nations (future world government).
Losers of the First and Second World Wars were the countries of Europe because Europe was the battlefield in both wars and there was much destruction. Europe was the loser in both world wars because European countries lost some of their imperial possessions around the world after the First World War and all of their empires (with the connivance of the USSR, the USA and the UN) after the Second World War. (The USSR and the USA had more in common than we might realize).
The USSR and the USA were winners in both world wars. After the First World War, the Soviet Union came into existence. After the Second World War communist influence spread into Eastern Europe, China, Indo-China and Korea so communism was a winner (thanks to Franklin Roosevelt at Yalta).
The USA was winner after the Second World War because it rose out of a long economic decline and became the world’s number one superpower.
Finally, little Israel was a winner of the First and Second World Wars because after the First World War we had the Balfour Declaration and the promise of a state for Israel and after the Second World that promise of a state for Israel was fulfilled (see Arthur Koestler’s interesting little book about Israel called “Promise and Fulfilment”).
Finally, let me sum up the meaning of history in one short sentence as I have done before on these pages:
History is the attempt of man to see himself as god. Nietszche said: “God is dead.” Few people any more believe in the idea of a supernatural God. Great emphasis is given in schools to educate children about evolution as a meaning of history without God and that is no accident. History is an expression of will and intention. There is a battle going on for the hearts and minds and souls of men.
This is as brief and detached a view of the meaning of history as I can make it. You will note that I do not take sides and I withhold moral judgment.
And I rest my case.
